November 1, 2011 Water Technology Forum – Rapid, Real Time Monitoring of Pathogens, Dayton, Ohio Wright Brother Institute and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), EPA, the Dayton Development Coalition, with sponsorship from the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education, hosted an innovation forum to explore issues and challenges associated with the development and deployment of technologies, products and systems for rapid, real-time detection of pathogens in water. Approximately 30 representatives from academia, industry, and government (AFRL, EPA, and local) explored the technical challenges, prospective solutions, and opportunities for future collaborations. October 5 and 6, 2011 Water Energy Nexus Forums, Dayton and Cincinnati[e4] EPA and the Wright Brothers Institute hosted this forum to provide an opportunity for researchers and regional stakeholders to learn more about innovative and state-of-the-art water treatment and reclamation technologies to conserve or provide renewable energy. The forum included technology presentations from companies, presentations from regional resource organizations, and facilitated round-table discussions on how needs, resources and research inside EPA, WBI and other organizations can assist companies in further technology development and deployment. Attendance was around 40 the first day and 70 the second day. Attendees represented small companies, large corporations, industry, state and federal agencies, universities, consulting firms, and others. May 23, 2011 Water Challenges Workshop – Meeting the Demands for Innovative Solutions[RHn3] , Cincinnati, Ohio The Water Challenges Workshop identified major challenges and technology needs faced by the different water sectors nationally and internationally. The intent was to provide information that the innovation community (researchers, small companies, investors, etc.) can use to target its technology research, development, and commercialization efforts, and the regional Water Technology Innovation Cluster can use to inform and target its development and to select topics for follow-on meetings. Over 160 representatives from academia, economic development, investment, government (Federal, state, and local), industry and other sectors attended. Municipal water utilities from Dayton, Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky also provided a regional perspective on technology needs to highlight the local marketplace for innovation and its connection to national challenges and sector needs. The workshop was cosponsored by EPA and the Water Technology Innovation Cluster, Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, YSI Incoporated, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, and Dayton Development Coalition. May 12, 2011 The WTIC – A Regional Model for Advancing Economic, Environmental, and Human Health Goals [e2] This purpose of this 1.5 hour webinar was to introduce the WTIC to a broad group of environmental professionals (national water associations, regional universities w/water programs, and others) and provide an overview on EPA’s role in water technology innovation and the cluster. Alan Vicory, the Chair of the WTIC Board and the Executive Director of the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, provided the overview of the WTIC and Michael Gonzalez, the former co-chair of the EPA cluster project and the Acting Branch Chief for the Acting Branch Chief of EPA’s Systems Analysis Branch, provided information on EPA’s role relative to the cluster and water technology innovation. March 28, 2011 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and State Funding Opportunities & Proposal Preparation Workshop[e1] , Cincinnati, Ohio Co-sponsored by EPA, CincyTech, SBA, and the WTIIC, this one day workshop provided companies with information about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SBIR program, which awards incentive funding to small businesses to translate innovative ideas into commercial products that address important environmental problems. Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and regional and state economic development organizations provided information on funding opportunities in Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana, proposal development resources and assistance, and technology areas of interest. Six regional companies that attended the workshop submitted proposals for EPA SBIR funding. Awards should be announced shortly. |
